Audi has revealed its latest supercar – the R8 Spyder.
With a V10 engine producing 530bhp, the roofless R8 can reach 62mph in just 3.6 seconds and carry on to a top speed of 197mph. Audi also claim that is is capable of returning a combined economy figure of 24.1mpg – much higher than its rivals.
Using a lightweight cloth hood, the R8 has been designed to be as rigid and light as possible. By using aluminium and carbon fibre throughout the car’s bodywork, Audi was able to make the car 208 kilograms lighter and 50 per cent stiffer than the previous model. This means that the latest-generation R8 should handle and ride even better than before.
Driving through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the R8 Spyder powers all four wheels through Audi’s Quattro system. This can distribute power to each wheel according to traction, and can even transfer 100 per cent of the car’s drive to either the front or rear wheels.
Inside, there’s still enough technology to keep the R8 comfortable on longer journeys. A 12.3-inch virtual cockpit system provides all important information for the driver, and a Bang and Olufsen provides clear audio. Sound is played through head rest-mounted speakers, meaning that even when the roof is down, driver and passenger can enjoy listening to music.
LED headlights come as standard, though units with newly-developed laser technology can be added. With orders opening up later this spring, deliveries will begin later on in the year.
