The Government has proposed that new vehicles in Britain could be exempt from MOT tests for four years.
With roads being improved and vehicles more reliable than ever, it is now viewed believed new cars will be safer to drive for longer before being tested.
New cars have been MOT-free for their first three years since 1967, after which time owners must get their vehicles checked annually, and Transport Minister Andrew Jones said:
“We have some of the safest roads in the world and MOT tests play an important role in ensuring the standard of vehicles on our roads.
“New vehicles are much safer than they were 50 years ago and so it is only right we bring the MOT test up to date to help save motorists money where we can.”
Any new rules would most likely come into effect in 2018.
