Thousands of motorists could be missing out on cheaper car insurance premiums as many major insurers are failing to offer discounts for vehicles fitted with a dashcam.

Dashcam sales are at an all-time high as more motorists install the recording devices in their cars that can settle disputes – and supposedly drop insurance premiums.

However, research by Smartdriverclub – a blackbox provider – has found that some of the biggest names in car insurance do not offer discounts for cars fitted with a dashcam.

NFU Mutual, Zurich, Saga, Direct Line and other large providers refuse to offer discounts for vehicles with a dashcam. Meanwhile LV offers “tiny” discounts, but this all depends on the type of vehicle.

The study also found that just one price comparison site – Confused.com – allows motorists to say whether or not they have a dashcam when researching premiums.

There has been some good news for drivers this week, though, with research by Moneysupermarket.com finding that average insurance premiums have actually dropped in the first quarter of 2018. At the end of December 2017, average premiums were £574.11, with the average price of insurance at the end of March being £504 – a noticeable drop of £70.

This drop in premiums is thought to be a result of the increased safety technology being fitted to most new cars. Unfortunately drivers aged 17 to 19 are still being penalised, with premiums for new motorists rising by 1.21 per cent – the only group to do so.
