After what seems like an eternity of teaser videos and barely glimpsed prototypes, McLaren has finally confirmed performance figures for its flagship P1 hypercar, as the first customer model rolls off the production line.

The all-new hybrid sports car, which costs £866,000, will crack the 0-62mph sprint in just 2.8 seconds, putting it into an elite band of top-tier supercars – including the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport and Ariel Atom V8 – able to accelerate to the benchmark speed in under 3 seconds.

Even more astonishing is the fact that the P1 will get to 124mph from a standstill in just 6.8 seconds and from 0-186mph in 16.5 seconds. It will keep on piling on the speed until an electronic speed limiter calls time at 217mph.

While these figures marginally eclipse those of Porsche’s own hybrid supercar, the 918 Spyder, it is yet to be seen whether the McLaren will be able to get the better of its main rival, the Ferrari LaFerrari, of which only a 0-186mph time of 15.5 seconds has been confirmed.

Ferrari will announce other benchmark figures in due course, but will not give an official top speed, claiming it is irrelevant.

The P1 will also stop just as quickly as it accelerates. Thanks to powerful carbon-ceramic brakes and sticky performance tyres, it will get from 62mph to a dead stop in 30.2 metres – less than half the 73 metre distance the Highway Code says is required.

Despite the staggering performance bestowed by the P1’s 903bhp 3.8-litre V8 engine, thanks to its onboard battery pack and electric motor, it is able to travel up to 6.8 miles on electricity alone, making for remarkable fuel economy and emissions figures of 34.0mpg and 194g/km CO2 respectively.

The P1 production run is limited to just 375 examples. McLaren has confirmed that the first one has been delivered, and was picked up from the factory by a UK buyer at the end of September.
