Jenson Button is set for a role on Top Gear, sources believe.

The former Formula 1 World Champion has gone down well with viewers of the show, after he made a guest appearance on the second episode of the most recent series.

Sources are now claiming that Button, who currently lives in Monaco, is ready to commit to the show which has suffered diminishing viewing figures. So far, it has lost a third of its viewers in a fortnight.

Those close to the show claim that Button topped a ‘wish-list’ of possible presenters they hope would be able to return the fortunes of the show.

A source told The Mirror: “Jenson gets on brilliantly with Chris, and is of course a fantastic driver who can give viewers the benefit of his vast experience at the highest level.

“He is a global superstar; witty, articulate and popular with all ages and sexes.

“Jenson was first choice when the current line-up was being drawn up as he was expected to retire from Formula One but McLaren offered him a new deal and he decided to take it.

“He has had a miserable time with an uncompetitive car this year and paddock gossip claim his place in the team might be under threat next year.”

However, when asked about these claims a spokesperson for the BBC replied: “No chance”.

Chris Evans, who currently heads up the six-strong presenting team, is currently on a three-year deal, while the rest of the line-up are signed for one year with the option of a further 12 months.
