The small city car segment is one of the most popular in the UK. With inner city areas becoming even more congested, the benefits of owning a small, efficient car are even clearer than before.

The Volkswagen Up! is the German manufacturer’s smallest car, combining excellent build quality with strong used credentials and good fuel economy. With all this in mind, which is the best model to go for? We’re here to have a look through the Up! range and pick the best.

The Smart choice for money saving – Take up!

The Take up! is the entry-level model in the range, priced form £8,870. Just because of the lower entry price doesn’t mean any lower quality, however.

Inside, the Take up! has a radio and CD player, with an auxiliary socket for connecting an MP3 player. It also has a three-spoke steering wheel and a good variety of storage solutions.

On the exterior, the Take up! has daytime running lights, colour-coded bumpers and full-size wheel trims. Even in its very base trim, the up! is still a very good looking car.

For engines, we’d go for the ulta-efficient 1.0-litre Bluemotion petrol, which can return up to 67.3mpg on a combined cycle.

The Smart choice for value – High up!

The High up! combined a good variety of creature comforts, styling extras and interior additions for a very decent price – £11,500 in fact. Of course, the price is a definite hike over the Take up!, but the equipment that comes with it does justify the rise.

Stepping into the interior, the High up! features air conditioning with manual adjustment. On top of this, there’s a touch screen navigation and radio system providing colour information at the very heart of the dashboard. As well the infotainment system, the High up! offers heated seats and a leather covered adjustable steering wheel.

Outside, the package includes 15” alloys wheels and front fog lights adding an extra edge to the car’s already sharp styling.

Again, the best engine to go for is the 1.0-litre petrol, which excellent fuel economy whilst still providing enough performance.

The Smart choice for technophiles – Rock up!

The Rock up! really is full to the brim with technology, but adds even more exterior extras to give the up! a sporty, more hot-hatch look.

Air conditioning is again included inside, along with an infotainment system and a split-grain leather steering wheel. There’s also a six-speaker audio system and heated seats in the front.

Outside is where the Rock up! really comes into its own. Features include 16” alloy wheels framed by a fully body kit. This kit comes as a gloss black front spoiler, side skirts, rear diffuser and a rear roof spoiler. To even further enhance its sporty credentials, the Rock up! has a racing stripe going up the centre of the car along with gloss black door mirrors.

The up! is a quality item, in whatever trim. From the base level model which offers the very best of entry-level motoring to the top-of-the-range Rock up!, there really is a car for even the pickiest of driver. The question is, which one will you choose?
