The Jaguar XE is a popular small saloon designed to take the fight to the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4. With excellent on-road driving characteristics, as well as good residuals and running costs, it’s easy to see why the XE has become so popular.

However, with five trim levels to choose from, as well as a range of engines, picking an XE model can be tricky. That’s why we’ve picked three of our favourites for a variety of possible buyers.

The Smart choice for saving money – XE SE

Being a Jaguar, even the base-specification XE isn’t going to be short of toys. However, some incredible technology can be had for the base price of £29,775.

Powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, the SE returns excellent emissions and consumption figures of 99g/kM CO2 and 75mpg respectively. A six-speed manual is used to send power through to the wheels.

On the outside, SE buyers will find 17-inch alloy wheels, gloss black trim and metallic paint. On the inside, there’s a range of technologies designed to make the XE as comfortable as possible. There’s an eight-inch colour touch screen display, which incorporates the navigation system as well as traffic sign recognition and intelligent speed limiter.

As well as this, there’s an 80W sound system, which uses Bluetooth telephone connectivity and audio streaming to provide the very best sound.

8×8 manually adjustable cloth seats give all occupants a comfortable place to sit, and electric recline means that it’s easy to find the right position.

A reversing camera means that parking should be even easier, too.

The Smart choice for value – XE R-Sport

The R-Sport builds on the equipment offered on the SE, giving owners even more technology and exterior design.

18-inch alloy wheels give the R-Sport a more purposeful look on the road, as does the R-Sport bodykit – this includes a redesigned front bumper, body-colour side sills, chrome side power vents and a bootlid spoiler. Metal treadplates with R-Sport branding mean that the effect is conveyed from the moment you open the car’s doors too.

Sports suspension is also included and lowers the ride height of the XE – this gives the car even better road handling as well as giving the car and even sportier stance.

Inside, there’s leather sport seats and a R-Sport branded multi-function leather steering wheel. Two zone climate control means that the temperature in the car can be constantly monitored and changed. The R-Sport does also include also of the infotainment technology offered on the SE model, too. It comes with a standard price of £32,325.

The Smart choice for technophiles – XE Portfolio

The Portfolio sits at the very top of the range and offers the very best technology and comfort that Jaguar has to offer.

Perforated ‘Windsor’ leather seats with 10-way electric adjustment mean that driver and passenger will be comfortable no matter how long the journey, and a Meridian sound system gives powerful sound clarity.

Interior mood lighting with selectable colours gives drivers a customisable element to the cabin, while Lane Departure Warning, Emergency Brake Assist and Dynamic Stability Control mean that the XE can help the driver keep everything in check on the road.

Also included is Autonomous Emergency Braking, which can sense an oncoming collision and apply the brakes accordingly.

Rain sensing wipers, a heated rear windscreen and a tyre pressure monitoring system all mean that drivers can have the more mundane features of car ownership looked after by the vehicle’s onboard systems.

Of course, there is a price increase for all of the extra equipment – the XE Portfolio comes in at a base price of £32,975.
