Speed limits may be the bane of many motorists’ lives on the road, but Ford has come to the rescue with its ‘intelligent speed limiter’.
Unlike other systems fitted to cars that let you manually set a fixed limit that the car won’t exceed – unless you flatten the throttle – the latest system from Ford could make it impossible to unwittingly break the speed limit.
This new kit, which will be launched on the new 2015 S-Max people carrier, is clever enough to know the speed limit for every road that you might encounter, thanks to information from the sat nav system and a front-facing camera, which keeps watch for upcoming road signs.
Not only is the car capable of logging the changing legal speed limit – in the UK and abroad – but it can then automatically prevent the car from exceeding that speed. The system is activated through steering wheel controls, which let the driver select an absolute top speed. The car will then prevent the driver from exceeding this figure and can slow the car below this if it senses a lower limit in force.
Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit.
As the limit increases, the car will then allow the person behind the wheel to up their speed to the new limit. Should a driver need to accelerate to get out of harm’s way, the system will also temporarily allow the driver to exceed the limit if they press the throttle hard.
Introducing the new safety kit, Stefan Kappes, Ford Europe’s active safety supervisor, said: “Drivers are not always conscious of speeding, sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement.
“Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit.”
