The Ford Fiesta remains the UK’s most popular new car, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Selling 8,083 units in April, it comfortably beat its nearest rival the Vauxhall Corsa, which sold 6,084 units.
Fluctuating fuel prices and the general increase in the cost of motoring have had an affect on sales, with the top ten most popular dominated by small, fuel efficient hatchbacks.
The Ford Focus took the number three spot with 5,944 sales, followed by the Volkswagen Golf and Vauxhall Astra, which sold 5,283 and 4,244 units respectively.
Despite the threat of a triple-dip recession, and a continuing downtrend in sales on the continent, the UK car market is growing. 163,357 cars were registered in April – a 14.8 per cent rise on last year.
The growth means the UK car industry is set to meet a full-year target of 2.107 million units. Good news, but some 12.3 per cent short of the 2007 pre-recession total.
Ford has further reason to celebrate, with the Fiesta and Focus being the most popular cars this year so far – accounting for one in seven cars sold.
Premium brands, too, showed increased market share with Jaguar Land Rover posting sales increases of around 25 per cent and the Audi A3 just making it into the top ten, with 2,935 being delivered to customers.
Sales between petrol and diesel engine cars are closely split, with petrol cars increasing market share thanks to the popularity of small city cars amongst private buyers. Sales of alternative fuel vehicles, such as EVs remain stagnant, with just 1,858 sales in April.
