Crash test organisation Euro NCAP has today revealed its ‘Best in Class’ winners for 2018. The group consists of three new cars from separate segments that stood out for their safety during testing.

The Mercedes A-Class was named the safest small family car, while also achieving this year’s best overall safety rating.

The Lexus ES saloon was the best all-round performer in its ‘Large Familiy’ category, while also being the best performing hybrid or electric car in 2018 safety testing.

The Hyundai Nexo picked up the Large Off-Roader best in class award.

Euro NCAP secretary general Michiel van Ratingen said: “The three ‘Best in Class’ award winners this year all clearly demonstrate that car makers are striving for the highest levels of protection.

“In 2018 we introduced tough new tests, with a particular focus on Vulnerable Road User protection. Euro NCAP’s assessments are a catalyst for these crucial safety improvements.”

Ratingen added: “We hope that all car-makers will rise to this opportunity as Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and Hyundai have done this year.”

Going into the future, Euro NCAP have said they are adapting their testing to new developments, such as automated driverless technology.

Safety testing for this has been carried out throughout 2018, and will continue with any further steps that are made in the field, ensuring ‘consumers have all the information they need when considering these new driver technologies.’
