Deadline for EV charging grant nears – here’s what you need to know

The deadline for applying for the Government’s Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme is getting closer, meaning that if you’re thinking of installing an EV charging point at your home then you need to get things in motion.

But if you’re not sure whether or not you want to install a charging point – or if you’re unsure about the grant itself – here are some of the key things you need to know.

What is the grant all about?

Not quite – there’s still time yet. To qualify, the charging point will need to be installed by March 31, which means that you’ll need to book an installation in plenty of time before that point.

You’ll also need to make sure that you order your charging point by the start of February, as it’ll take a little bit of time to both arrive and be installed.

Can anyone still get money off after the deadline?

Yes. Even after that March deadline has passed, those electric car owners who live in flats and rented properties will still be able to take advantage of the grant, but will of course have to speak to the property owner about installation and use.

How much will it cost to install a charging point without the grant?

Like so many products, the cost of an electric car charging point varies when you consider different types of chargers and the varying price of installation. However, an average price is determined to be around £800 – though again, this is down to the type of charger you fit.

As is the case with many home installations, it’s a good idea to make sure you get the right price. It needs to be installed by a qualified electrician, who will need to make sure that your home is capable of delivering the correct amount of electricity and that it can be located in a place that is safe and easy to access.
