Surrey County Council is warning parents not to buy potentially deadly Chinese car seats after a number of illegal car seats have been purchased online.
An investigation by the local authority has discovered that these seats, which do not have any manufacturer’s label, could prove fatal in a crash as slow as 30mph.
Child seat manufacturer Britax put one of the seats through its testing programme and found that the illegal seat disintegrated upon impact, firing the three-year-old-sized dummy into the windscreen.
Consequently, Surrey County Council is warning parents to avoid these child seats, which fail to meet any UK safety standards.
The council has taken around a dozen seats off the market and is removing more than 100 further car seats from eBay and Amazon websites. Several foreign websites are continuing to sell these illegal products to British buyers, however.
Surrey County Council is urging parents to avoid these seats and purchase brand new child seats sold by reputable companies.
Helyn Clack, the council’s cabinet member for community services, said: “The crash test kindly carried out by Britax shows this car seat would cause horrific injuries at just 30mph, so tell us urgently if you’ve seen one and we’ll take action.”
