British sports car company Caterham is to unveil its most extreme model ever at this week’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Called the Caterham Seven 620R, it takes over from the R500 as the fastest car in the manufacturers Seven range.
?It’s powered by a 2.0-litre Ford-sourced four-cylinder engine, developing 311bhp thanks to the addition of a supercharger.
Given the Seven’s famed light weight, that power is enough to get the 620R to 60mph from a standstill in a scarcely believable 2.79 seconds.
Unlike Caterham’s less powerful models, which can be ordered by budding mechanics in kit form, the 620R will only be available as a factory-built car.
Caterham Cars CEO, Graham Macdonald, said: “The 620R is the most hardcore production Seven ever built for the road.
“The R500 claimed its place in motoring history as a benchmark for lightweight sportscar performance but this new vehicle pushes the boundaries even further.
“While I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this car for those inexperienced in driving Caterhams, we always ensure that even our fastest cars retain the manageable delivery of power that makes them accessible, despite the daunting statistics.”
Priced at £49,995, the 620R is rather expensive, given the lack of comfort or equipment it offers. However, for sheer driver thrills, you’d need to spend at least six figures on an Italian exotic to get anywhere near it.
