With prices starting from just over £10,000, a variety of frugal petrol and diesel engines and plenty of standard equipment on even the most basic models, the Fabia makes a savvy purchase for those after an affordable small hatchback.
We’ve trawled through the Fabia range to find the most appealing versions for those on a shoestring, those wanting the most bang for their buck and buyers ready to splash the cash on a plush top-of-the-range model.
The smart choice for those on a budget: 1.0 60 S – £10,600
The Fabia 1.0 60 S is the cheapest model of all, but with a digital radio, Bluetooth, electric heated wing mirrors, a height adjustable driver’s seat and plenty of safety kit all included as standard, you shouldn’t feel short changed. As a result, the Fabia feels like a substantial machine for its price tag which falls safely below the £11,000 mark.
The 1.0-litre petrol engine may not be powerful, requiring a lengthy 15.7 seconds to lumber to 62mph, but it feels enthusiastic enough on the road and is capable of claimed fuel economy of 60.1mpg, meaning that trips to the petrol station should be few and far between. Annual car tax also weighs in at a meagre £20 per year, thanks to CO2 emissions of 106g/km.
The smart choice for value for money: 1.2 TSI 90 SE – £13,390
Up the budget and the 1.2 TSI 90 has to be the pick of the Fabia range for its sheer value and generous kit list. Despite offering a hefty dose more power than the 1.0-litre model above – thanks to the addition of a turbocharger – meaning that it can sprint to 62mph in a nippy 10.9 seconds, the 89bhp 1.2-litre model exactly matches the cheaper model for fuel economy with low emissions of 107g/km.
SE trim includes air conditioning, a trip computer, an uprated sound system, 15-inch alloy wheels, height adjustable front seats and a speed limiter function to make sure that you don’t accidentally exceed the speed limit.
The smart choice for technophiles: 1.2 TSI 110 DSG SE L – £15,890
Buyers after more equipment will want to opt for SE L trim, which features an even longer list of standard kit. We’d steer clear of the diesel models, though, as they carry a hefty premium of around £2,000 over equivalent petrols – which are still capable of around 60mpg – which you’ll have to cover many tens of thousands of miles to recoup with greater fuel economy.
In 109bhp 1.2-litre petrol form, the Fabia also offers strong performance, accelerating to 62mph in just 9.4 seconds, while still being capable of 60.1mpg. Meanwhile, SE L trim adds luxuries like cruise control, climate control, front and rear floor mats, a front arm rest and front fog lights along with 16-inch alloy wheels. Even in range-topping SE L trim this Fabia comes in at safely under £16,000, meaning that it shouldn’t break the bank.
