Journalist Steve Sutcliffe has made a film, in partnership with Ford and BP/Castrol, highlighting some of the best driving roads that Europe has to offer.

Researchers have covered nearly 10,000 miles in the pursuit of the very best driving roads, in locations ranging from Romania to Spain. All of them were undertaken in a series of high-performance Ford vehicles.

One particular highlight is the 330-kilometre long section of road overlooked by ‘Dracula’s Castle’ in Romania. This goes up against other routes, including Yorkshire’s Blakey Ridge, to compete for the very best driving road in Europe.

Sutcliffe, who is a veteran of the car testing circuit, said: “It’s amazing some of the roads didn’t actually make the list – but we weren’t just looking for twisty runs to please the petrol heads. We scored each route for thrills, quality of road surface, accessibility, hospitality, scenery and food and drink.

“Enthusiasts will know some of the roads, like the Transfagarasan Highway in Romania, but perhaps not the C462 in Spain. In some ways it would be nice to keep these roads to ourselves – but when roads are this good they need to be shared.”
