Drag race: Audi TT vs Toyota GT86

January 30, 2014 | By | In Buying Guides, Video

Dependent on your point of view, the Audi TT is either the last word in premium coupes or an ordinary hatchback in a posh two-door frock. Certainly, it doesn’t have the conventional rear wheel drive layout of ‘proper’ sports cars, and panders to customers’ desires for practicality with usable(ish) rear seats and a big boot.

It’s a recipe that has worked well for the brand, but now there is a new kid on the block in the form of Toyota GT86. Yes, it doesn’t have the same upmarket interior or badge-snob appeal as the Audi, but has been built on principles likely to appeal to keen drivers: rear-wheel-drive, a low centre of gravity and a rev-happy 2.0-litre naturally aspirated boxer engine.

With similar levels of passenger and boot space as the Audi, it’s not as though they can be separated on practicality either. So, there’s only one thing for it: a drag race to see which one’s quickest.
