Volkswagen Golf tops sales list as Europe's favourite car

August 19, 2010 | By | In Statistics

The Volkswagen Golf is Europe’s favourite new car. Figures just released confirm the hatchback as the continent’s best seller so far this year, shifting almost a third of a million in 2010.

The Ford Fiesta takes the runner-up slot while another Volkswagen, the Polo lies in third place.

Details of Europe’s top sellers, compiled by market intelligence company JATO Dynamics, are given below.

Total sales for 2010 are lower than last year, when most Europeans had the chance to take part in state-supported buying schemes. In Britain, they received £2000 discounts on new cars provided they traded in a car that was at least 10 years old. The govt funded half the savings offered while motor manufacturers gave the rest. Other countries had similar schemes – but all ended early this year.

Turning to prestige German brands, it is interesting to see Audi, once the under dog, now out-selling BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
