98% of drivers forget theory knowledge

New research commissioned by Motors.co.uk has found that more than 98% of drivers forget their theory knowledge less than a year after they pass. Most shockingly, those who passed less than six months ago are the worst culprits, with 100% of participants in this category failing the test.

The theory test, which was introduced almost 20 years ago, has been made progressively tougher over the years, but this study shows that the majority of drivers are not remembering vital knowledge that ensures safety on the roads.

Out of the 12 respondents who managed to pass, 75% had passed their theory more than 16 years ago, showing driving on the roads to be the most valuable learning experience when it comes to safety and danger.

Further alarming results include:

• 1 in 20 drivers think you can drive on the hard shoulder if you are braking, overtaking or in gridlock traffic

• 80% of drivers who took the theory test in the last year think you can drive on the hard shoulder if you are braking

• Two thirds of drivers are unaware of road safety procedures related to those who are visually or hearing impaired.

Motors.co.uk asked respondents – ranging from drivers who passed less than three months ago to drivers who passed their test when it was first introduced almost 20 years ago – to answer questions that would commonly be found in their car theory test. Only 1 in 1,000 of the respondents who took the test answered every answer correct on the test. Motors.co.uk surveyed 1,000 respondents through OnePoll in July 2015.
