As the GB Rally marks the end of this year’s World Rally Championship, motorsport fans can still get their fix of mud-flinging action, as the East African Classic Safari Rally gets underway.
Dubbed the ‘world’s greatest rally’ the staggering 3,824km route comprises of no less than 26 competitive stages across two countries, Kenya and Tanzania.
Now in its sixtieth year, the rally sees 64 competitors battling it out over the nine-day event. During that time they’ll drive through some of Kenya’s most spectacular game parks and motor in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Being a classic rally, the rules state that cars entered must be built before 1978, and this year’s collection is a motley crew of Ford Capris, Mazdas and even a rare and beautiful Ferrari Dino, which has come straight from a stand at a concours event in Kenya. It is believed to be the first time a Ferrari has turned a wheel in competition in the whole of Africa.
Also proving their worth away from the pristine blacktop of the racetrack are no less than 34 rally-prepared Porsche 911s, 16 of which have been fettled by British family outfit Tuthill.
And, while it may not have the prestige of the World Rally Championship, the East African Classic is not short on talent, with former World Champion Bjorn Waldegard and fellow countryman and rally driver Stig Blomqvist both vying for glory.
The East African Classic Safari Rally concludes on November 29.
