German carmaker Volkswagen has showcased its new Trailer Assist Technology with an interesting video that takes backing up a trailer to a whole new level.
The system, which is available on the Passat Estate and Saloon models, takes control of the car’s steering when reversing, leaving the driver to operate the throttle and brake.
The video takes this system to the extreme, with a Passat and box trailer reversing at high speed through a town’s streets in Norway – with the trailer taking the lead throughout.
The reversing Volkswagen overtakes vehicles on single carriageways, navigates roundabouts and manages to make its way through a multi-storey car park. Astounded onlookers can do nothing other than stand by and look aghast.
At the end of the video the trick is finally revealed, showing that the trailer is made of one-way Perspex – with a 1.4-litre engine and a driver contained inside.
