Skoda unveils new Rapid Spaceback

July 16, 2013 | By | In News

Buying a new car today can be confusing to the uninitiated. Whereas in years gone by, a customer would be presented with a simple choice: hatchback, saloon or estate, now those looking to change their motor need to negotiate an ever expanding market of crossovers, four-door coupes and mini MPVs.

To further add to the confusion, Skoda has released the first official images of this, the Skoda Rapid Spaceback. It’s based on the compact Rapid hatchback, which is styled to look like a saloon. However, despite looking like an estate car, the Spaceback has a smaller boot (415 litres down from 550) than the standard model.

Befuddled? We don’t blame you. Hopefully all will be explained when the car makes its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

Power is provided courtesy of a range of four petrol and two diesel engines. While the UK lineup has yet to be confirmed, it is likely to include turbo charged 1.2 and 1.4-litre units, as well as a 1.6-litre diesel model with sub 99g/km C02 emissions.

Skoda says the new styling is designed to appeal to a younger audience, and as such a range of customisation options will be available, including a panoramic glass roof that runs the length of the car and a ‘prolong’ rear window, which extends the tint on the rear glasswork.

As is usual with Skoda, the Rapid Spaceback will come with a raft of convenience features, including a plethora of cabin storage bins, a dual-floor boot and an ice-scraper fitted into the fuel-filler cap.

The Skoda Rapid Spaceback is expected to arrive in UK showrooms by the end of the year, priced at a small premium over the hatchback model, which starts at £12,905.
