Roadworks to be removed in time for Christmas

Highways England is aiming to finish or remove 145 roadwork schemes by December 23, freeing up more than 400 miles of motorway network in time for Christmas.

The measure will see 98 per cent of the 9,534-mile UK road network free from road works, making it easier for those travelling at the busy festive time to get around.

The news will come as a welcome relief to many drivers who are planning on making long trips over Christmas.

Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin told the Sunday Express: “We are on the side of the honest motorist, making it easier for people to get around and creating jobs and opportunities.

“It’s impossible to improve roads without some element of engineering work, but I also know how frustrating they can be.

“We are determined to minimise disruption.

“This move will allow hardworking people to travel around freely at Christmas time and see friends and family."

The measure will affect some of the busiest routes across the country. This includes the M1, M6 and M25. As well as removing the roadworks, 273 different works at 106 locations will be completed before the holiday begins.

More than five miles of roadworks on the M5 near Exeter will be completed, along with nearly five miles on the M25 near Abbotts Langley.

Two miles of roadworks on the M40 near Warwick will see completion, as well as nearly 15 miles on the M1 near Barnsley, Wakefield and near Leicester.
