Peugeot unveils spacious 308 SW

Peugeot is to expand its 308 model-line with a new estate version, named SW.

Shown here for the first time, the new model will get its official public debut at the Geneva motor show in March, before reaching UK showrooms later in the Spring.

Based on the French marque’s handsome mid-sized family hatchback, the SW grows in length by 32cm to accommodate some 610 litres of load space – 140 litres more than the hatchback.

This generous luggage capacity makes it identical in size to the current class leader, the cavernous Skoda Octavia estate. The SW also outsizes the estate versions of both the Ford Focus (476 litres) and Volkswagen Golf (605 litres).

Peugeot has yet to confirm how big the load space will be with the rear seats folded flat, but the it has stated that it will be a “very practical and clutter free purpose-designed space”.

For greater convenience, the rear seats will fold flat with a single lever, mounted inside the boot.

Expect a wide range of economic petrol and diesel engines when the 308 SW makes its showroom debut, including an ultra-frugal BlueHDi version with CO2 emissions as low as 85g/km.

Thanks to its new EMP2 chassis underpinnings, Peugeot is claiming the 308 SW is 140kg lighter than its predecessor, something which will benefit both fuel economy and the experience behind the wheel.
