One in five to avoid driving over Easter

With the long bank holiday weekend just over a day away, you may be visualising sitting in traffic in the baking heat. However, a survey out today has shown Brits are planning shorter journeys and almost one-fifth will be putting down their keys and leaving the car at home.

Easter bank holiday is traditionally one of the big driving weekends of the year. A public survey by polling company ComRes, and sponsored by Autogas Ltd, found that those in the North of England, Wales and the South West will be travelling the furthest this weekend, averaging around 50 miles, whereas motorists in London and the South East will be driving around 35 miles.

22 per cent

Nearly a quarter of drivers will be avoiding getting behind the wheel over the Easter weekend.

The survey also revealed that 22 per cent of drivers will not be driving their car at all this weekend. Autogas has suggested that this is because of rising fuel costs as well as the predicted traffic jams.

“We believe the cost of petrol and potential traffic congestion mean people are less willing to spend hours on the road on the Easter Bank Holiday weekend,” said Linda Gomersall, General Manager of Autogas Ltd.

“More broadly, household bills – including petrol – mean the cost of living is at an all-time high at the moment.

“However, fuel is an area where people can look to save money through the use of LPG. Currently LPG is around half the price of unleaded and diesel and available at 1400 refuelling sites across the UK. More needs to be done to end the duopoly of these fuels and give people more cost-effective and cleaner alternatives.”
