Nissan creates self-cleaning car

For those drivers who want nothing more than an immaculately clean car all the time and for those of you who can imagine nothing worse than spending our weekends slaving over a muddy car – this could be the solution to your problems.

Nissan has initiated tests on a new paint technology that repels dirt, meaning washing your car could be a thing of the past.

The paint used is super-hydrophobic and oleophobic, meaning it repels water, oils, mud and everyday dirt. By creating a protective layer of air between the paint and the environment, it stops standing water and the grime effectively runs off the car before it has the chance to stick.

The Japanese carmaker has applied the cutting-edge tech to its new Note model, creating the world’s first self-cleaning car. Take a look at the video above to see for yourself how it all works.

Nissan will be testing the coatings effectiveness on the Note over the next couple of months.

Currently, the paint is being marketed and sold by UltraTech International. There are no plans to apply the paint to the Note as standard but Nissan is considering the coating as a future aftermarket option.

The Note already features a ‘wash and blow dry’ function on its rear view camera, using water and compressed air to automatically keep the lens clean, making it the perfect car to test this self-cleaning technology.

Geraldine Ingham, chief marketing manager for Nissan Note, commented, "The Nissan Note has been carefully engineered to take the stress out of customer driving and Nissan's engineers are constantly thinking of new ways to make families' lives easier.

"We are committed to addressing everyday problems our customers face and will always consider testing exciting, cutting edge technology like this incredible coating application."
