There’s nothing like a good road trip to wash away the stresses of everyday life. However, one man has made epic road trips his everyday life for the last 26 years. German, Gunther Holtorf – a former airline executive – quit his job decades ago and has only now finally finished 550,000 miles of exploring the world in his trusty 1988 Mercedes 300GD off-roader, at the age of 77.

Despite the monumental mileage that this machine has racked up – and the fact that more than 150,000 of these miles were across some of the roughest terrain imaginable – this Mercedes is still on its original engine.

The car has endured everything from temperatures of -27 degrees in Siberia, to +50 degrees in Alice Springs in Australia and even made it all the way to Everest base camp – some 5,200m in altitude – and to North Korea.

Having crossed no fewer than 215 countries according to the Western Daily Press, this Mercedes has driven straight into the record books and has truly earned its place on display in the Mercedes museum in Stuttgart.

Have a watch of the video above to see just how this car earned its position in Stuttgart.
