Lib Dems consider 10mph speed limit

Green transport laws to reduce the amount of air and noise pollution could see some speed limits reduced to just 10mph if Liberal Democrat plans get the green light.

Despite controversy over the introduction of 20mph zones in a number of cities, the Liberal Democrats could introduce even lower limits, should they come to power in the upcoming general election. Motivating the suggestion – which is set to be debated at next weekend’s Lib Dem spring conference in Liverpool – is the attempt to cut air pollution levels outside schools.

These green policies will be up for discussion at the party meeting, with Energy and Climate Change Secretary heading up the debate, backed up be environment minister Dan Rogerson.

It's no exaggeration to say our future, and that of our children, depends upon us tackling climate change head on.

This new proposal forms part of the Lib Dem’s Green Transport Act, which could lead to high-emission vehicles being barred from British roads by 2040. Furthermore, all new buses and taxis would have to be “ultra-low emissions” from 2030 onwards. Green policies front up the Lib Dem’s entire election manifesto, with “five green laws” promised by the party.

A spokesperson for the Lib Dems said: “It's no exaggeration to say our future, and that of our children, depends upon us tackling climate change head on,” reports the Press Association.

"The more we delay, the more we are at threat from this ticking time bomb. This is why if in Government again we will set about making Britain zero carbon, securing home grown renewable energy while cutting our reliance on fossil fuels from abroad. "Our proposals are a bold ambition to end Britain's adverse impact on climate change completely and these two policies form part of this."
