Lexus previews new NX crossover

Until now, if you wanted an upmarket compact SUV, you had little choice but to plump for the big-three German premium brands. You could have considered a Land Rover Freelander, but sitting near the bottom of the marque’s off-road range, it’s a long way from the opulence of the mighty Range Rover.

Thankfully, Lexus is getting ready to throw its hat into the ring with its NX crossover. This striking vehicle follows in a similar vein to its bigger brother, the RX, in not being offered with a diesel option – something that may hurt its popularity with mpg conscious British buyers. Instead, the Japanese brand is championing its hybrid technology, with the range topping NX300h equipped with a 2.5-litre petrol-electric combo. Projected CO2 emissions and combined fuel economy are 120g/km and 54.3mpg respectively.

Due to reach showrooms in October, the NX will be available in a multitude of different trim levels, and will be offered in both front- and four-wheel-drive guises. It’ll also showcase a number of high-end touches, including a pre-crash safety system across the range and a wireless charging pad for mobile phones.
