Jag E-Type named ‘greatest car of all time’

Classic car popularity has rocketed over the last few years and it’s a string of classics that top the list of greatest cars of all time, in a recent poll by the Discovery Channel’s Wheeler Dealers show. And the car that beat all others to the title of the world’s most iconic car, is the Jaguar E-Type, which pipped the Mini to the top spot.

British cars took up eight of the top 10 spots in this poll of 2,000 British drivers, with the E-Type and Mini taking up the two positions, along with four Aston Martins – the DB5 famed in several James Bond films, the DB9, V8 Vantage and the Vanquish, along with a few Rolls Royces. The remaining two cars hail from Germany – the rear-engined Porsche 911 and VW Beetle, though these two take the third and fourth spot in the list.

This underlines the incredible heritage of British car manufacturing, where originality, style and performance have been the hallmarks of many of our greatest cars.

The Jaguar E-Type’s iconic status has not gone unnoticed by classic car aficionados though; values for the very best E-Types have soared from around £35,000 to a whopping £120,000 over the last three years, with around 3,400 of the cars, built between 1961 and 1975 still on the road and a further 1,000 registered off the road.

A total of 32 per cent of survey respondents voted for the E-Type, while one in five went for the Mini and 18 per cent the Porsche 911. The highest ranking Italian car, the Ferrari F40 meanwhile, languished in 11th place. Mike Brewer, Wheeler Dealers’ car trading expert told the Daily Mail: “This underlines the incredible heritage of British car manufacturing, where originality, style and performance have been the hallmarks of many of our greatest cars.”
