Italian police gifted new Lambo patrol car

Italian ne’er-do-wells beware! Your local plod has a new weapon in the fight against crime: a 602bhp Lamborghini Huracan.

In stark contrast to the sluggish Vauxhall Astras and BMW estates that our own coppers are lumbered with, the Italian State Police have been gifted the mid-engined supercar by the iconic Sant’Agata-based marque as a replacement for their ageing Gallardo.

Decked out in full police livery, the Huracan would certainly make for an intimidating sight in your rear-view mirror. It’s more than just a show piece, though, and the Italians plan to put it to work immediately as a motorway patrol car.

As such, the Huracan has been significantly modified. Aside from the paintwork and roof-mounted lights, the car comes complete with a gun holster, police radio, number plate recognition cameras and a ‘Paletta’ communication system used for pulling over suspicious vehicles.

The car’s 202mph top speed also makes the Huracan an ideal tool for critical organ transplant delivery vehicle, so it’s been further decked out with a refrigerated compartment and defibrillator.

Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann handed over the keys to police chief Alessandro Pansa at a special ceremony yesterday afternoon. Lets just hope they take better care of it than their old Gallardo, which had to be extensively repaired following a heavy crash in 2009.

That car is likely to become a fixture at Lamborghini’s factory museum, taking its place amongst a plethora of exotics from the brand’s star-studded history.

In a statement, Winkelmann said “We have a strong and fitting relationship with the Italian State Police. The new Lamborghini Huracan stands for Italian super sports car excellence and we are proud to provide it to the Italian State Police to carry out the specialist tasks these police cars undertake."
