Hillary Clinton issued with £40 parking fine

Hillary Clinton has been issued with a parking ticket in central London after a traffic warden battled past her minders to get to get to her limousine.

The plucky City of Westminster parking attendant was seen being accosted by five Secret Service officials, who had been huddled in an adjacent minibus sheltering from the rain.

Mrs Clinton had been in London to receive this year’s Chatham House Prize in recognition for her contribution to international diplomacy and gender equality, and her motorcade was parked in nearby St James Square, Mayfair.

However, rather than pay for a £3.30 per hour parking ticket, her security team decided not to bother, despite neither Mrs Clinton or her car – a silver Mercedes S-Class – enjoying diplomatic status.

For future reference, Mrs Clinton can now also download a parking app for her iPhone which will tell her in real time where a parking space is in the City of Westminster.

As a result, she was issued with a £80 penalty by the persistent traffic warden, which was halved to £40 as she paid within fourteen days on her credit card.

Cllr Daniel Astaire, Westminster City Council cabinet member for business, told the MailOnline: “Despite our traffic marshal being questioned by the secret service for just doing his job, he was in the right.

“The former US Secretary of State was parked for nearly 45 minutes without paying. I’m sure she will understand that we have to be fair to everyone, regardless of their status on the world stage.

“For future reference, Mrs Clinton can now also download a parking app for her iPhone which will tell her in real time where a parking space is in the City of Westminster.”

Hillary Clinton isn’t the only US official to find themselves on the wrong side of London’s traffic regulations. American diplomats have accrued over 66,000 penalty notices in the last ten years for failing to pay the congestion charge, generating a bill of around £7.5million.
