Floods expose recovery policy exclusions

With storms continuing to batter the country, rising floodwater is affecting an increasing number of motorists, with thousands relying on breakdown companies to fish their motors out of the drink.

However, many drivers who’ve had their cars recovered from the floods are now being faced with unexpected bills due to grey areas in their coverage policies.

Car owners have found that some companies flat out refuse to recover a car if it’s stranded in a flood, and some will only come out for those who pay up an on-the-spot fee, which can be as high as £150.

Others have been left to claim money back from their insurance companies, which can mean risking the loss of a no-claims bonus and increased future premiums.

Scott Kelly, of comparison site GoCompare, told Thisismoney.co.uk: “Drivers need to be aware that the cover available from breakdown companies varies considerably, so if you live in a flood-risk area, it is sensible to check your car and breakdown policy so that you know exactly what protection you have.

“If you are unlucky enough to encounter flood water, don’t automatically assume your breakdown company will rescue you for free.”

With most breakdown policies, damage caused by floods is classified as an accident rather than a breakdown, resulting in the additional fees for callouts.

Drivers are being urged to be particularly careful while driving through high water, as the potential damage to car’s engine can be devastating and irreversible.

The AA predicts that around three-quarters of cars affected by floods will be written off by insurers.
