Ferrari’s finest go under the hammer

Sixteen of Ferrari’s rarest and most sought after models are to be put up for auction at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este classic car show next month.?

Held annually on the shore of Lake Como in Italy since 1929, the prestigious event showcases priceless historic cars as well as providing a suitable audience for high-end manufacturers to unveil their latest products.

?This year it is also hosting an event by collector car auction house RM Auctions, in which forty exotic vehicles will go under the hammer.

Making up the lots include some of the greatest road cars that F1 constructor Ferrari has ever produced, including its entire back catalogue of ultimate modern-era hypercars.

Perhaps best known is the Ferrari Enzo. The striking V12 supercar was built to celebrate the company’s 60th anniversary and was built in a production run limited to just 400 examples. The model presented for sale has hardly been used, showing just 1,028km on the clock. It is expected to fetch between £660,000-755,000.

Also up for sale are the Enzo’s predecessors, the F50 and iconic F40. Regarded by many to be the finest driver’s car ever built, the F40 pushed the boundaries of supercar design and engineering, being made from a lightweight cocktail of carbon-fibre, Kevlar and aluminium. Estimate prices for this piece of automotive history are in the region of £275,000-360,000.

These are simply guide prices, however. Given the exclusive nature of the vehicles and the well-heeled individuals the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este attracts, the cars could easily fetch double their estimates.

One of the stars of the auction will be the track-only Ferrari 599XX. Only 29 of these 720bhp 6-litre monsters were ever produced, and sold to the company’s most favoured clientele. Intended as a test-bed for future Ferrari race and road car technology, it holds the record for the fastest lap by a production-derived sports car at the fearsome Nurburgring racetrack in Germany. This piece of extreme engineering could be yours for around £1million.

The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este takes place on the 25th May.
