Could this app end school-run misery?

A Wimbledon AS-level student may have the solution to the school-run misery endured by parents up and down the country each day, after developing a smartphone app designed to encourage car sharing.

Seventeen-year-old Andrew Christopher came up with the idea after watching countless 4x4s, some with up to five vacant seats, continually clog the roads outside his school during the morning and afternoon rushes.

Dubbed ecomumy, the app allows users to connect with parents at their children’s school and co-ordinate with those making similar journeys.

"When I travelled to school I would always notice there was a lot of congestion so I wondered if there was a way to resolve this issue and reduce traffic congestion as well as CO2 emissions."

He cites technology tycoons Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg as his inspiration, and hopes his app will lead to reduced vehicle emissions and improved safety for children outside the school gates.

Speaking to yourlocalguardian.co.uk, Andrew said: "When I travelled to school I would always notice there was a lot of congestion so I wondered if there was a way to resolve this issue and reduce traffic congestion as well as CO2 emissions.

"I would like all the schools in Merton to come forward on the idea of ecomumy so they can use it as a model and help the environment."

Andrew originally came up with the idea for ecomumy when he was 15. After teaching himself graphic design on his father’s computer, he created a storyboard for his app and sent it to developers in India who turned it into a digital reality.

The app has now been entered into an EU competition for innovators who come up with solutions to key social challenges.
