Basil Fawlty returns to TV screens in advert

One of comedy’s greatest characters, Basil Fawlty, has made a return in an advert for Specsavers.

Played by John Cleese, Fawlty became a household name thanks to his short-tempered appearances in the Fawlty Towers series.

The advert, which comes over 35 years after the comedic character last graced the nation’s screens, is designed to show the importance of wearing the right glasses.

The scene has been made in the style of the old show – with Fawlty spouting a vicious rant against a malfunctioning car. A similar scene featured in the original series – though the vehicle in question has gone from an Austin 1100 to a much more up-to-date Fiat Punto.

Cleese did mention in 2009 that the show would never be revived – claiming that even getting the old cast back together would not mean that they could meet expectations of the show.

Only two six-part episodes of Fawlty Towers were made, with one released in 1975 and the other in 1979.
