Estate version of Vauxhall's replacement for the Vectra joins the line-up from April.

The estate version of Vauxhall’s new Insignia family car pitches up in showrooms next month. Called the Sports Tourer, Vauxhall expects it to account for one in seven of all Insignia sales.

With a load volume of up to 1530 litres when the rear seats are dropped, it’s up there with others in its market sector, but falls short of the 1733 litres provided by its arch-rival, the Mondeo. However, with the seats up, the Vauxhall matches the Ford at 540 litres.

If sales of the Insignia models already launched – the hatchback and saloon – are anything to judge by, SRi models will prove to be the top sellers, with SE and Elite models next in line.

Of the six engines available, it is expected that the 129bhp and 158bhp 2.0 diesels will be the most popular with private buyers and fleets alike. A 1.8 petrol, 2.0 turbo and a 2.8 V6 will also be offered, along with a new engine, a 1.6 petrol turbo.

The Sports Tourer is available with a choice of chassis settings: Sport, which comes on SRi models, or Comfort, which is standard on the others.

Prices run from £17,865 for the 1.8 Exclusiv, making the Sports Tourer some £1100 more expensive than the equivalent saloon or hatch.
