Top five things to do after an accident

None of us like to think about car accidents and hopefully never have to. However, if you are involved in one then it's key to keep as safe as possible, on the right side of the law and in the best position for an insurance claim. Accidents happen quickly and it’s often difficult to keep a clear head, so we have compiled five important steps to follow. Why not print this out and keep in your car, just in case?

1. Time to stop: If you’re involved in an accident, it’s a legal requirement to stop. If you don’t, you’re committing an offence under the Road Traffic Act. Only leave your car if you are physically well enough to do so, before checking the area outside is secure, putting your hazard lights on and finding somewhere safe to stand away from traffic.

2. Notify the authorities: If anyone is hurt or a car is blocking the road, then you need to call 999 and request police assistance, as well as an ambulance as soon as possible. For more information on what to expect when you call 999 please click here

3. Think before you speak: According to Churchill, you shouldn’t say sorry or accept blame at the scene of the accident. It hasn’t yet been established in the eyes of the law or your insurance company who is at fault, and admitting blame may impact your case. 

4. It’s all in the detail: If there’s another driver involved in the accident you need to collect their name, address, vehicle registration and insurance details. Do the same for any witnesses present. Where possible, take notes and photographs of the scene so you clearly remember the details and have as much evidence as possible for your insurance company. You will also need to give or leave behind your own information, whether there’s another driver present or not. 

5. Call your insurance company: Once you’ve done all of the above, it’s time to inform your insurance company. This is where all the details and evidence you’ve collected will be requested and the claim will be taken out of your hands and dealt with by the experts.
