With the Geneva motor show all wrapped up, it’s now the turn of the Americans to flex their automotive muscle. Next week sees the opening of the 2014 New York Motor Show, and there is an array of concept and production cars due to be seen in public for the first time. It’s not all US-centric pick-up trucks and V8 engined muscle cars either, with the major European brands set for some large-scale product unveilings. Here are they cars we’re looking forward to seeing most:
Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept
Land Rover’s Discovery Vision Concept will preview the design direction that will shape the marque’s forthcoming range of vehicles, which will all be marketed under the Discovery nomenclature. More importantly, the vehicle will also showcase its pioneering off-roading technology. Dubbed ‘Transparent Bonnet’ by its creators, it uses a series of cameras and an extra large head-up display to allow the driver to ‘see through’ the bonnet and avoid otherwise hidden obstacles. It points to an exciting future of augmented reality tech for drivers.

Mazda is remaining tight-lipped over exactly what it is bringing over to New York, but rumour has it that the Japanese brand will be unveiling a new roadster model. While not likely to be the full production version of the next generation MX-5, we can expect to see at least a concept version, which will hint at the styling of the eagerly awaited forthcoming two-seater.

The closest thing the Americans get to a crossover, the Jeep Renegade is a departure for the iconic off-road brand, being its first model to compete in the compact SUV market. It’s based on the Fiat 500L but doesn’t sell out completely, being offered with full-time four-wheel-drive and low-range ability. In an effort to keep fuel consumption down, the Renegade will be fitted with a nine-speed automatic gearbox and a range of efficient four-cylinder engines, carried over from its Fiat stablemate. Expect to see it on UK roads in the summer of next year.

BMW M4 Convertible
The official pictures have already been released, but New York will be the first time the new M4 Convertible will have been seen in the metal. Based on the M4 Coupe, and sharing its 425bhp, 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, the Convertible adds a three-piece folding metal roof for a £4,000 premium. Despite weighing in some 250kg more than the Coupe, it will still manage to crack the 0-62mph sprint in 4.6 seconds. It goes on sale in the UK in September.

Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe
The Mercedes CL is dead, replaced by the quite frankly stunning S-Class Coupe. It was first shown at last month’s Geneva Motor Show and now it’s the turn of the monstrous AMG tuned version. Powered by a 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, the S63 Coupe develops 577bhp, fired at the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic gearbox. Concealed by the swoopy bodywork is the wonderous and tech-laden interior of the S-Class limousine, meaning you needn’t break a sweat just because you’re travelling at warp speeds. Just bought a Bentley Continental GT? We hope you kept the receipt…
