A young motorist whose SUV went over the edge of the ninth floor of a multi-storey car park had an incredible escape after a guide wire wrapped around one of the vehicle’s wheels and brought it to a stop.

The 24-year-old man was attempting to park at the Littlefield parking garage in Austin, Texas shortly after 2:30pm on Friday when he lost control and ploughed through the safety barriers.

However, instead of falling metres to the pavement below, the vehicle was left suspended vertically, and a bystander helped the man clamber to safety out of an open window.

Speaking to Austin Police Department, the driver said that his vehicle had flipped end over end before the entangled wire brought it to a halt.

Firefighters were called to the scene, where they painstakingly lowered the vehicle to the ground, before it was removed by a car transporter. Fuel and glass was cleared from the scene.
