Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has outlined how it will integrate alternative powertrains into its future models.
Speaking to local media, JLR’s German CEO Peter Modelhart confirmed that Jaguar will use fully electric vehicles, while Land Rover will use hybrids.
Modelhart said that a fully electric Jaguar would need to be a capable daily driver, “which refers to range as well as interior space.”
Jaguar is set to push forward with electric car technology and will have a team in the Formula E electric racing car series for the 2016/17 season. This will give the company the opportunity to develop its EV technology for use in road cars.
The car’s chassis will be made by Dallarra, but the drivetrain will be made by JLR. Modelhart said that competing in electric motorsport gives the company quick access to EV technology and shortens learning time. “We will learn a lot for our series-production cars,” he said.
While electric powertrains make sense for Jaguar as it builds cars that focus on refinement and performance, Modelhart said that “a hybrid system probably makes more sense” for Land Rover. This is because they are likely to be taken on a variety of different surfaces and to remote locations, so having hybrid powertrains means there is “the right propulsion for every requirement.”
With regulations pushing car manufacturers to turn towards new powertrain technologies, many companies will be shifting their attention towards electrification and hybridisation.
