Whilst Chris Rea may have been content just to sing a song whilst he was driving home for Christmas, the rest of us require a little bit more entertainment. With long motorway queues and hours of boredom stretching out ahead before the merriment and feasting of Christmas can begin, why not stick on an audiobook? It’s a tried and tested way of entertaining passengers of all ages, so check out our selection of the best audiobooks for this year’s Christmas drive.

The Night Before Christmas

This wonderful poem is the perfect way to conjure up Christmas cheer, and we’re sure you can recite at least a little bit of this iconic tale. Great for short journeys, or just short attention spans!

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

A wacky take on a Christmas tale from none other than the magical Dr Seuss – keep young kids entertained with the story of the disgruntled Grinch and his madcap attempts to steal Christmas. With zany rhymes and comic characters, you’re sure to have them laughing all the way.

The Hobbit

The recent release of the film has sparked new interest in this classic story, and whilst it’s not technically Christmassy, this epic will keep you entertained for hours even whilst you’re stuck in traffic. Follow the story of Bilbo Baggins’ adventures in Middle Earth, journeying into the unknown with Gandalf the wizard and a gang of dwarves. Sure to enchant even the grumpiest of teenagers.

A Christmas Carol

Best for slightly older children and adults alike, this traditional tale about the true meaning of Christmas will warm your heart. Dickens tells of Ebeneezer Scrooge, the bitter miser with no friends, who learns the error of his ways and learns to love Christmas.
